unconditional conditions

This thought isn’t original to me at all. I heard it and am turning it over in my head a lot. Here’s the idea:

Many people like to think that unconditional love demands an unconditional relationship. God, marriage, friendship – use any relationship as an example that fits for you. The point being made was that it simply is not true. Unconditional love actually demands a very conditional relationship.

A couple of brief examples:

One from scripture – “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son,¬†that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16 Whoever believes. Condition.

One from everyday life – The bank calls and says you’ve been approved for the loan, just come in and sign the papers. You have the loan, but you have to come in and sign the papers. Condition.

There was more conversation on the topic but I think that gives a good synopsis. I’ve never thought of it like that, but it makes sense now that I am.

Unconditional love, in any relationship, requires…demands…conditions.

What do you think?
