“Oh, The Places You’ll Go”

oh-the-places-youll-goOur little boys are 4 and 2. As I’m sure you can imagine evening story time is a wonderful time together. This week I stumbled on a book to read to them that I had never read before. Dr. Seuss’s “Oh, The Places You’ll Go.”

This one’s a keeper. It encourages going after life. Points out the importance of making good decisions with where you will go and who you will be with. It points out that there will be set backs. There will be times you are the center of attention, and times you will feel totally forgotten. There will be times of abundance and times of want and need. There are even battles to be fought within yourself, in those all alone places. Oh, there are lessons throughout this “children’s” book.

If you haven’t read it, no matter your age…find it. Read it. Again. Find a child you care for, no matter their age, and read it to them. I hope to read this to my boys until they are old enough to say something like, “Uh, yo. Dad. This is a KIDS book. Why, oh, WHY are you still reading this to us?” Then the real conversations begin.

As Dr. Seuss closes the story:

“Today is your day!

Your mountain is waiting.

So…get on your way!”
